Dallas Morning News “Bakers find a niche for artisanal cookies
at farmers markets” :: 09/23/2009
Eight years ago, Clyde Greenhouse and Michal
Taylor started Kessler Cookie Co., an online concern named for Kessler
Park, where the life partners live.
"It actually started off as a cookie we
baked at home for friends and family," says Greenhouse. That was
the chocolate-chip-pecan. Made with ingredients such as chocolate chunks
and oatmeal, Kessler cookies are like luxury versions of Mom's home-baked.
The game plan was to custom-bake each online
order, says Taylor, 41, and over the years the duo has built a thriving
baking and confectionary business, especially making corporate gifts.
Taylor and Greenhouse, 44, both have day jobs, so they bake at night
and on weekends.
But farmers markets have changed their trajectory,
Greenhouse says. All of a sudden, they're getting more exposure and
selling more cookies.
"We get face to face with consumers and
do that one-on-one," he says, at Bolsa and Celebration farmers
markets and White Rock Local Market, all new this year.
Their ultimate goal, adds Greenhouse, is to open
a retail shop next to their bakery in Oak Cliff. "We've just got
to solve the parking issue."

If dear old Mom could bake a cookie like this, we’d still be clinging
to her batter-stained apron. Happily, we have Clyde Greenhouse and Michal
Taylor with their sweet mail-order treats from Oak Cliff. Though the
triple-chocolate cookie is a sweet bite of mocha madness, we’re
partial to the chewy, crumbly oatmeal cranberry walnut cookie. It’s
tart, nutty, old-fashioned perfection. The boys also offer their cookies
in custom tins and baskets. They make great presents – if you
can keep your hands off them. And we can’t. 214-948-7412. www.kesslercookies.com.

"One bite of Clyde Greenhouse and Michal Taylor's baked-to-order
treats and you'll be searching for the nearest quart of milk. Named
after their neighborhood - the wonderfully eclectic Kessler Park in
North Oak Cliff - the cookies are made with all-natural ingredients.
Thought chocoholics swear by the triple chocolate cookie, we're in sweet,
crumbly love with the oatmeal cranberry walnut. It's just like your
grandma used to make. But only if she could bake this well."
